Living Wall in Precast
| Studio Project in Oakland Corner Condition |
UC Berkeley, Spring 2021
Alongside daylighting and operability, I focused on developing a modular living wall system executed through precast concrete. In this modular system, there are 3 panel types: solid, living, and transparent.
The solid panel is a solid concrete panel with lips that extrude out, which protects the vegetation panel from western winds on the southern façade.
The transparent panels are associated with the living panels; these windows are operable, so the intention is that the interior environmental quality will improve due to its proximity to the vegetation.
Overall, all panels are components that contain all of the façade’s structural and performative features.
The living panel considers its own waterproofing, netting, and planter system; yet all panels run irrigation and drainage pipes, have rebar support and connections between the panels and the floor plates, and have insulation.
